Welcome back to The Code of Style, and this feature about How To Reduce Allergens in Your Home.

Seasonal pollen allergy worsens yearly as the hot temperatures lead to more concentrated pollen from grasses, flowers, weeds, and trees. The longer the high temperature lasts, the worse it gets. Pollen isn’t your only worry since indoor allergens like dead skin, dust mites, and animal fur could also trigger an allergic response. Fortunately, you can do a few things to relieve allergy symptoms and make your home more comfortable all season. Below are a few to consider.

Don’t let outdoor allergens inside

Keep your windows closed as much as possible to prevent allergens from getting inside. It may be impossible to keep your windows closed unless you have air conditioning.

But aside from your windows, pollen may stick to your clothing and shoes as you enter the home. You can put a mat outside your door to wipe those allergens off your shoes or have a safe area to take them off before entry. You can implement a no-shoe entry policy if you share your space with others or frequently invite people over. Humidity creates an ideal environment for dust mites and mold, so it can be useful if you maintain cool temperatures inside to check humidity.

Carefully choose your houseplants

Studies have shown that indoor plants can boost your overall home appeal, enhance mood, increase creativity and help manage stress. Houseplants have been shown to help eliminate air pollutants for a happier, healthier home.

However, some indoor plants can collect dust, promote mold growth, and even carry pollen that triggers an allergy. Additionally, there may be cross-reactivity between some outdoor allergens and your indoor plants. So, carefully choose your houseplants if you want to add some green life to your space.

Allergy-resistant flooring

Tile and wood are perfect floorings if you have an allergy. Besides cigarette smoke, mold is a prevalent indoor problem for many people. Individuals who are not allergic may suffer from asthma and some allergies when inhaling smoke in their airways.

If you are a fan of rugs, beware of thick and fluffy ones since they can trap allergens. You can invest in wool rugs since they are extra resistant to mold than the synthetic options. Meanwhile, the sisal or polypropylene-made short-weaves are easy to clean.

Purify the air

Running your AC, keeping your windows shut, and prohibiting pets from your bedroom can prevent the congestion you feel when you wake up. However, an air purifier can make you feel much better albeit the noise. You can turn it on and shut the door when you are going outside. Ensure the air filters and those inside your HVAC system are always in good shape to optimally filter the air inside your home. You can consult air duct cleaning and indoor air quality experts like Ductz for more ways to purify the air.

Your home is your haven, and you cannot allow your pets, mold, dust, and other allergens to make it uncomfortable for you. Try to implement the tips above to make your home allergen-free.
