Welcome back to The Code of Style and this article on Cooking Skills Everyone Should Master.
Cooking is a fantastic skill to have. TV and the internet are just awash with recipes, “how-to” guides and professional chefs cooking mouthwatering dishes. If you’re looking to develop your cookery skills, there are a lot of resources out there. Learning to cook well is a skill that will give you pleasure for the rest of your life.
Cooking Skills Everyone Should Have
Improve your knife skills
Do you stare in awe at the TV chefs who seem to chop everything so fast and accurately without even looking, while it takes you 15 minutes to chop an onion?
The first step in developing your knife skills is to get yourself some quality chef knives. You can’t chop successfully with low quality, blunt knives.
Once you have these, watch some how-to videos on YouTube, get yourself a load of vegetables from the supermarket and get practising.
Learn how to cook the perfect steak
Obviously for meat-eaters only. The perfectly cooked steak is a wonderful thing. Cooking a steak takes practice. Once you master it though, it’s a skill which will impress any carnivores you’re feeding.
You need to learn about the different cuts of steak and how they need to be cooked. Some people prefer their steaks rare, and others well done. Cooking a well-done steak that is still juicy and doesn’t require a trip to the emergency dentist is the goal!
If you’re entertaining, steak is the ultimate high impact, low effort meal.
Expand your culinary palette
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and only eat what you’re used to eating. That way lies food boredom. Chefs say that your should try an ingredient three different ways before you write it off as something you don’t like.
A few times a month, try cooking a dish you’ve never had before or add new and interesting ingredients to your existing recipes. You never know, you might just find your next favourite dish.
Perfect A Signature Dish
Everyone should have at least one recipe that they can cook really well. Perhaps you already have something you like to cook. If that’s the case try and kick it up a level and make it a spectacular dish.
Some people like to try and perfect a dish from each type of cuisine, such as Chinese, Thai, Indian and Italian. That way, you know that you always have a fantastic dish standing by to match people’s tastes.
It’s also a good idea to have a few interesting side-dishes and desserts in your repertoire.
Concentrate on the basics
All good cooks have a range of skills in basic cookery. You might want to cook a complicated, fancy dish but what if you can’t boil an egg? Start with the basics in preparing and cooking food and start working your way up to more complicated dishes. By doing this, you’re going to be teaching yourself important life skills that you can use throughout your life and even teach to your children if you have a family.
