Welcome back to The Code of Style, and this feature about Tips for Taking Care of Your Health.
When was the last time you took a look at your physical and mental health? We get it. We’re living in a time right now where it feels impossible to be able to take care of yourself because if you’re not plugging away and earning money, you’re going to fall behind in your bills.
It’s so important that you treat your mental and physical health as important as each other. If you’re going to buy the best nutrition bar for your body when you want a snack but you don’t want chocolate, then you need to make sure that you are booking regular therapy sessions as the nutrition for your mind. You have to think about what you could be doing to improve your mental health as well as your physical health. But if you’re not taking care of yourself properly, you’re going to feel it very quickly. It’s becoming much less taboo now to talk about your mental health is something that you’re struggling with. So you need to think about what you need to do to become mentally well, physically well and emotionally intact. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you could be doing to take better care of your health.
Tips for Taking Care of Your Health
1. Take the day off
If you want to take better care of your mental health, then if you need a mental health day, you need to be upfront and say so. There is nothing wrong with taking a day off to look after your mental health when you just need a moment to breathe. We all feel so selfish when we do this because we’re so used to just cracking on and getting on with life. But you shouldn’t feel selfish for taking better care of your health.
Think of it as preventative medicine. If you take a day right now to recharge and relax, you’re going to give your body some time to catch up. This could prevent a real sick day in the future.
2. Get up and move
Sometimes laying in bed watching Netflix is exactly what you need. But sometimes you need to move your body. Even if all you’re doing is walking around your home to tidy things up, get yourself up and about and don’t just wallow in bed. Not only will that help your physical health, they will help your mental health as well.
Zoning out with a good series can be therapeutic as a coping mechanism, and that’s wonderful. But it’s much helpful to find other tools that will help you to calm down and feel good about yourself. Exercise is just one of those tools.
3. Start having more fun
A good way to get yourself feeling healthier is to make sure that you are having more fun. Imagine when you’re on vacation and you go out for more dinners, or you go and do an activity that you wouldn’t normally do well. Start injecting a little of that into your regular day-to-day life and you’ll see exactly what you need to be doing to have more fun in life. Fun doesn’t have to be the exception, it can be the rule.
4. Meditate
It can be very difficult to do this because if your brain is constantly on the go and your mind is constantly busy, it can be hard to just be still and empty your brain. You don’t have to accomplish anything or reach some kind of enlightenment in the 1st 5 minutes, but you do need to take a moment and pause.
Just taking a few minutes to calm down can help you to do wonders for both your heart and your mind. If you don’t know where to start, just sit quietly.
5. Add more magnesium to your diet.
Adding more magnesium is going to help you with fighting those high stress levels that you’re dealing with. Magnesium has been known to alleviate headaches and fatigue, and to help sore muscles, which can make you feel more inclined to exercise and move.
There are plenty of ways to add more magnesium without having to supplement in that you can pack your diet with avocados, figs, leafy greens and pumpkin seeds. You’ll feel the difference quite quickly.
6. Get some therapy.
If you want to take better care of your health, then therapy is a great way to do it. Having somebody or a primary care doctor on your side to ensure that you are not left behind is important.
A therapist is going to be uniquely qualified to treat you and the issues that you’re having. If those issues are interfering with your daily life, then it’s time to start looking at how you can make things different.
