Welcome back to The Code of Style and this article about What are the Qualities to Look for in Good Boots?
Chances are you’ve heard the saying, “They just don’t make them like they used to,” and you’ve probably felt the same way about a lot of products, too. It’s super unfortunate to think about, but yeah, there is a huge nosedive in quality for just about everything. Clothes tear so easily; kitchen appliances feel like they break in a matter of months rather than years; electronics- well, the list there is pretty endless, and when it comes to shoes, this definitely seems to be the most notorious.
At one point in time, boots were more than just a staple of fashion; they used to be a versatile and functional footwear choice that could withstand the elements while making a style statement. Again, that’s how they used to be. While you can still find versatile (and gorgeous) boots out there, it does seem like nowadays you have to pick between high quality, brand name/ logo, or the style itself. It’s not really something that could be seen as fair when, for decades prior to the rise of fast fashion, it used to be all three.
But with that said, nowadays, with so many companies out there and so much fast fashion, how can you find good quality boots? Well, here’s exactly what you need to know!
What are the Qualities to Look for in Good Boots?
1. Look for Superior Materials
There are some boots and brands like the Alden boots that are immediately known for their incredible quality, but not all boots (or brands, for that matter) can get such a reputation. So, if you want to feel certain you’re getting something good, this is where you’ll want to start.
One of the most important indicators of quality in boots is the materials used in their construction. It’s going to be a good idea to look for boots made from premium materials such as full-grain leather, which is durable, water-resistant, and develops a rich patina over time.
So this is mostly for daily boots, so if it’s something like workboots, snowboots, hiking boots, or some other type of utility-focused boot, you’ll instead want to consider options with waterproof membranes such as Gore-Tex or eVent since these can keep your feet dry in wet conditions. But does solid materials on a boot immediately mean that these will make for great boots? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple because there’s the actual craftsmanship that needs to go into the equation, too.
2. The Craftmanship Needs to Be Incredible
This was already mentioned above, and it’s true: you can have premium leather and still have horrible boots. It’s best to try to look in-store since this will give you an idea of the quality and craftmanship of the boot. So, you’ll need to examine the construction of the boots closely, paying attention to seams, stitching, and overall build quality. Sure, you can zoom in on product pictures online, but it’s still best to look in person.
3. Reputation of the Brand
Just because a brand is popular doesn’t mean that everything they make is inherently good. But with that said, when it comes to investing in high-quality boots, reputation, and brand heritage can be important factors to consider. Sure, big brands are a go-to, but be sure to look into smaller brands that have a high reputation, too. In fact, the craftsmanship will most likely be better if it’s on a smaller scale.
Conclusion: What are the Qualities to Look for in Good Boots?
By paying attention to these essential qualities and doing your research, you can find boots that not only look great but also perform well and stand the test of time. Whether you’re exploring the great outdoors or navigating urban landscapes, a good pair of boots will be your trusted companion on every journey.
